The discipline plan was reviewed with the entire school staff during October's staff meeting on October 8, 2007. Each month the staff will be appraised of discipline referrals that resulted in Principal's action: classroom, hallway, bathroom, lunchroom, playground, and bus conduct. We will review the severity, students having the problems, and ideas to resolve the problems.

Teacher / Supervisor Need for Documentation

Documentation in classroom, hallway, restrooms, lunchroom:
* Behavior is ongoing
* Parent contact related to student behavior
* Behavior is referred to Principal

Documentation on the playground:
* Conflict resolution does not work
* Fighting
* Ongoing behavior by same student
* Referral to Principal

Discipline Procedures for Riverview

1. Any behavior that is dangerous, disruptive, or unruly that interferes with the ability of the teacher to teach effectively will be handled in an appropriate manner by the classroom teacher or playground supervisor. Individual teachers will establish rules of order for their classroom and their instructional style. Teachers will share these rules with students as well as with the Principal. If students or parents have any questions about the rules of a classroom teacher, they may ask that teacher or the Principal.

2. If the classroom or school rules are not followed, depending on the severity of the student's behavior, the staff at Riverview will generally use the least restrictive consequence available in the following continuum:
..... Teacher / Student Conference
..... Student Movement within the classroom ("Take a Break")
..... Student Timeout to Buddy Classroom
..... Student Sent to the Principal's Office

.......... In the office: A "Better Choices" sheet is given that asks the student to describe what they did, why, how it affects them and the class, and what would be a better choice. This sheet will be returnedto the classroom teacher for approval, signed by the teacher, sent home, signed by the parent, and one copy returned.

.......... Each student who is sent to the office will be addressed by the Principal, possible logical consequences:

............... Cleaning up of the lunch room or other spaces
............... Lunch Detention
............... Recess Detention
............... After School Detention
............... Parent / Principal Conference
............... In School Suspension
............... Out of School Suspension
............... Alternative School Placement
............... Expulsion
............... Police Referral

3. We strongly believe that our disciplinary authority is an extension of the parental authority. Just as parents may have different discipline styles, there will be differences of opinion as to the level or method of consequence for disciplinary action. Therefore, every effort is made to call whenever a disciplinary referral is generated for conduct to maintain open dialogue. Parents are encouraged to call the Principal if there are ever any questions they have about procedure or discipline.

Behavior Expectations

Students have the right to attend school without the fear of physical threat, harm or verbal abuse.

Students have the responsibility to refrain from conduct that does not respect the rights, dignity, and safety of all individuals.

Students have the responsibility to express their thoughts and feelings in a manner that does not offend, slander or ridicule others.

Students have the responsibility to achieve at the highest possible level in a manner that does not interfere with the learning process.

"Magic Tree House"

In one corner of the Media Center, close to the story rug area, is the former "B.A.B.E.S. Clubhouse" that was renamed the "Magic Tree House." The house is up off the ground about a foot, with a ramp available, if needed for those with special needs, thus allowing them access. The inside of the Tree House has several small comfortable chairs and some pillows to make it a cozy place for reading. We keep a container of "whisper phones" in there for the students to use so they can read out loud, without being loud.

The students have to understand the proper use of the Tree House and be responsible to use it appropriately. It is a privilege that can and will be taken away if inappropriately used.

Furniture

The Library has library quality bookcases, tables and chairs. Though they are very durable, it is important for the students and other users of the LMC to understand the importance of taking good care of the furniture. We discuss this in each of my library classes, primarily at the beginning of the year, and throughout the year "as needed."

We also have a grouping of what I call our "soft furniture"...a sectional couch and cushion set in bright primary colors. During the Fall of 2007 we purchased 4 bean bag chairs with our Scholastic Book Fair profit (via their catalog). It is hard for some of our students to keep their feet off of our soft furniture. Some students like "plop" down, sprawl out, kneel on, or kick at these pieces of furniture. For those particular students, they may be told they will have to sit on the "hard" chairs at the table or on the story rug.

Two Basic Rules...

Our elementary school library rules are kept very simple:

*****Whispering voices.
*****Walking feet.

I want our library media center to be open and inviting for all the students... a true hub of learning. During our actual teaching time, the students need to have listening ears and be cooperative, but sometimes our "learning" is very interactive, so I like our rules to be very simple (and easy to enforce).
